Breast lift ("mastopexy") is a procedure that is done for breasts that sag excessively due to weight loss, aging, or after pregnancy. This surgery involves repositioning of the nipple level, and reduction of the amount of skin in the lower part of the breast. Small lifts might be done with relatively minimal incisions. The more skin that needs to be removed, the more extensive the surgery is likely to be. Unfortunately, scars are unavoidable in this situation. It is difficult to anticipate in advance what kind of scars any individual will form, but some tendencies can be estimated based on age and skin type, and Dr. Rechnic will be able to help you understand this.

The correct nipple level depends on the size of the person and the size of the breast. It can be estimated by what is pleasing to the eye, or by measuring the distance from the nipple to the sternal notch, which is where the knot of a necktie would sit at the base of your neck. Breast lifts can be done using only your own breast tissue, and some are done with simultaneous placement of implants if the tissue is insufficient.  If you already have breast implants and find that they are sagging, and breast lift is also a viable option.

Breast implants are not a substitute for breast lifting if the breasts are decidedly too low. However, full but low set breasts are likely to look better than empty looking low set breasts.

The advisability of a lift procedure will be discussed during your consultation. The most common risks of the procedure are unfavorable scarring, asymmetry, or changes in position after several months. As with all surgery, the risk of damage to the rearranged skin or repositioned nipples increases if you smoke cigarettes during your recovery.
